50 Years of Campus MinistryEstablished 1964
On Thursday October 2, the Board of Directors honored Dr. Loy Witherspoon with its Distinguished Service Award. The award was presented to Dr. Witherspoon, the founding campus minister, by United Methodist Bishops Larry Goodpaster and Lawrence McCleskey. The evening was opened with an invocation and welcome by the Rev. Ollie Rencher of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Olanda Carr of the Presbyterian Foundation, Beth Hardin (Vice Chancellor at UNC Charlotte), the Rev. Ben Day (UNC Charlotte alumnus), and two students (Conor Baker and Jasmin Issac) and the Rev. Stephen Cheyney (campus minister) made remarks. UNC Charlotte alumnus and renown violinist Brandon Buckmaster played two pieces. Dr. Mary Lynne Calhoun the Board Chair and Dean Emeritus of the College of Education announced that the award will now be called the “Witherspoon Award for Distinguished Service.” Rev. Phil Tennessean, Assistant to the Bishop of the NC Lutheran Synod gave closing remarks.
