In September Hurricane Irene caused extensive damage to the east coast, especially Nags Head. The storm didn’t damage most of the nice vacation homes – just the homes of those in poverty; just the individuals and families who have it hard enough. As if this wasn’t bad enough, FEMA funds can’t touch the exgagerated costs of labor contractors are now charging to repair their homes. This is where we can help.

If you want to party hard and forget any good times you have over spring break – you can do that. But if you really want to make a difference, help someone in need, and remember an amazing time … the people of the Outer Banks would really appreciate it. Plus, the NC Outer Banks isn’t a bad place to spend spring break.

Registration Deadline: February 16 deadline
Haitians faced the adversities of life on a daily basis even before a devastating earthquake struck January 2010. Although Haiti was devastated with the massive earthquake of 2010 there is hope in the midst of struggle. We have an opportunity to help restore some of this hope to this broken region. Our May 2010 Haiti Mission is not for the casual traveler. If you feel that you have a strong sense of service to others, work well under pressure, have an incredible amount of patience and flexibility handling the toughest situations, and a tug at your heart to make a difference then you may just be qualified.

Trip Date

Trip 1: May 13-May 20 … set between UNC Charlotte’s graduation and the first day of summer session 1. Ideal for UNC Charlotte and Central Piedmont Students.

Steps to Take

Complete our Interest Form. This is not a registration of the trip. It just will keep you in the loop. Everyone who wants to go must complete this form. Once you do this, we will send more info about officially registering for the trip.

Watch some quality videos about Haiti.

Our Haiti Portal … links that you should probably consider.

A letter just for your parents.

Thoroughly read our trip packet.

Costs

Airfare: We estimate airfare from Charlotte to Port-au-Prince to cost $750. We can’t lock any rate in until we can secure enough deposit funds with the airline. This takes commitment on your part. A $100 deposit is absolutely necessary as soon as possible.

Mission Costs: A fixed amount of $750 (Trips 1 and 2) will cover all ground transportation, food and lodging, interpreters and guides, entry and exit visas, trip insurance, and project costs.

Personal Costs: This includes souvenirs, food you buy in addition to three daily meals, the personal costs of obtaining a passport, or any medical costs incurred for your needed physical.

Safety

Safety is our top priority. The accommodations and food are both very carefully selected. This will be our fifth trip to Haiti and our 30th mission trip since 2000. Our mission sites, guides, and lodging facilities are as safe as possible, clean, and comfortable.

Our trip will focus on four areas:

 Relief

Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas remain in ruins. Part of our trip will entail helping Haitian families find new housing options. We will work with a mission in the Blanchard area near Port-au-Prince’s airport. Here students will spend a few days working to reinforce new homes in a way Habitat for Humanity works.

Orphans, especially those who suffer from mental and physical challenges, are shunned by large numbers of the Haitian population. We will spend time interacting, holding, and caring for those orphaned children. Specifically, we will work with an orphanage In the small community of Fermate in mountains above Port-au-Prince.

Haiti is saturated with numerous non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Overtime they have contributed to the failed-state of Haitian politics. We will spend significant time on our trip visiting several NGOs and learning how they work to solve major problems, how they related to one another and how they help and hurt the nation. We will visit Doctors Without Borders, Mother Teresa’s Hospital for the Destitute and Dying, Grace Children’s Hospital, Yele Haiti and more.

Finally we will work with one particular agency which is dedicated to restoring Haiti’s natural resources, stopping their deforestation, providing long-term solutions to overpopulation, unclean water supply and the effects of pollution. This will take us to Leogane, the epicenter of the earthquake. (This applies only to trips 2&3).

Each participant will need to complete the Participant Data Form which includes an area for your physician to sign. Instructions to your medical doctor are included about travel to Haiti. Your shots should be up-to-date.

If you take prescription medications, bring enough to last the entire trip. Trips to Haiti can be moderately stressful and sometimes more so. If you have a mental illness or a physical disability please let our staff know before your trip. If you have any special needs while in Haiti (medical condition, food allergies, or other special requirements) please let us know before your trip, and be sure to bring anything you will need with you.

Everyone should bring their own mini medical kit in their carry-on. Your kit should have chloroquine, any prescription medicines you are taking, Band-Aids, first-aid ointment, diarrhea medication, ibuprofen, insect-bite medication (it should contain DEET if possible), and a prescription antibiotic such as Cipro.

Our tickets will be purchased from Charlotte to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Connections are likely to be in Miami, but may also be at JFK. It may be necessary to make air arrangements in small groups, but you will at least have two or three others in your travel party. Once in Haiti the team will assemble. Specific details of arriving and navigating the Port-au-Prince airport will be given at the pre-trip briefing. If a student would rather meet the team in Miami, arrangements might be possible, so please let us know. Also if you have frequent flyer miles you would like to use, please let us know this as well.

Once in Haiti we will rely on the ground transportation connected with our partner missions. There is no need to worry about navigating Port-au-Prince and to and from the places we go. The traffic and road conditions in Haiti are very different that the U.S., and therefore no participant will be allowed to drive once in Haiti.

We will have the opportunity to stay in multiple places in Haiti which allows for greater exposure and experiences. While working relief, students will stay in a dorm style facility built for mission teams. While working at the orphanage, students will split guest rooms adjacent to the mission in the mountain town of Fermate, easily 15 degrees cooler than Port-au-Prince. While visiting the various NGOs students will stay at a beautiful guesthouse with a pool. Team 2 and 3 will stay in a very nice guest house tucked away. Each site is fortified.

Most meals will be provided by our ministry partners. They have been carefully trained to prepare safe and nutritious meals for our guests. We will also make every reasonable effort to accommodate some special dietary needs. However we may not be able to accommodate all special dietary needs requested because of the conditions in Haiti.

All participants traveling to Haiti must have a passport. You will not be allowed into Haiti without one. If you are applying for a new passport, please allow 4 to 8 weeks for this process. All travelers should bring a photocopy of the first two pages of their passport in their carry-on luggage.

Haiti entry and exit taxes will be covered by the trip cost. Instructions on how to complete the Haitian entry forms will be given to each participant. Re-entry fees by the U.S. Customs will only be applied if you make purchases in Haiti that are not duty-free.

When we post a trip cost, it includes: airfare, trip insurance, ground transportation, lodging & food, language Interpretation, entry & exit visas, and mission supplies/expenses. Expenses not covered include: food at airports during travel, telephone surcharges, checked bags, money exchanges, gifts, and items purchased

Do not bring a large amount of cash with you as this could endanger the rest of the team. Most Haitian merchants accept the U.S. Dollar as exchange rates fluctuate and their own currency lacks stability. There is no need to exchange money as these merchants will give change in the Haitian gourde. U.S. credit cards and travelers checks are for the most part useless in Haiti.

We will take care of certain tips and gratuities for all included meals and activities such as tips for porters, housekeepers, drivers, activity providers, local experts, and dining room staff for included meals.

To reserve space on the trip, a non-refundable $100 deposit is due when you register. If final payment has not been received by the posted date we reserve the right to cancel the reservation. However, your required trip insurance will protect you for certain cancellations.

Niner & Uptown United has a mostly fully stocked disaster response trailer ready to respond to regional disasters! The trailer was donated to the campus ministry by Myers Park and Covenant Presbyterian churches in our response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Since then we have sent five teams to New Orleans, one team to Iowa’s flooded region and teams to eastern North Carolina. We have used the trailer in Charlotte as well for Habitat for Humanity builds and our work with the Urban Ministry Center.

We are now training students forming teams for our Fall Break 2011 disaster response trip. Here’s how the process works:

Students, staff and faculty will be trained in September 2011.

When there is a disaster the campus ministry is contacted by the incident command center of the United Methodist Committee on Relief or Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.

For our October 2011 trip we have already been placed in Eastern North Carolina because of the recent tornados. Hurricane Irene may increase our work, but it will not change our ability to serve.

The Emergency Response Team will deploy.

The team’s help is usually needed within 1-3 weeks following the disaster. However, because we are a group of college students, our schedules are dictated by the academic calendar. Therefore, more often than not, our teams work on long-term community reconstruction.

The team is totally self-contained – which means we will not be dependent on the community hit. A team’s dependency on the ravaged community is usually called the “disaster after the disaster.” We will only rely on community resources when they are readily offered to us – we never request them.

Although students are typically the primary decision-makers when it comes to study abroad, we know parents are an important part. We hope to meet you prior to our Haiti 2012 trip.

The two primary concerns of parents are the cost and safety of trip. These issues also concern us, and we hope that our website will answer some of your basic questions about Haiti 2012. You will be glad to know that all participants are required to attend pre-trip meetings that will help to prepare them for travel to Haiti. Here the students will receive important cultural training, information on staying healthy and guidance toward staying safe while in Port-au-Prince. Also, we will have your contact information as each student will complete an emergency contact form to ensure ease of contact, if necessary.

Perhaps the most important thing to know is that a mission trip to Haiti will change your son or daughter’s life – for the better. Through a process of transformation, we have seen God move students in powerful ways. We encourage you to stay connected with your son or daughter and help them raise funds from family members, church members, and friends. Haiti has experienced devastating and complex traumas and our students will embed them into a life of mission and service.

The Haiti 2012 trip will revolve around four teams in Haiti from our campus ministry. Each team will be advised by non student leaders who have previous Haiti mission experience. Our sites for lodging will be in reputable and established ministries – NGOs – who for years have cared for U.S. teams with success. It is crucial for us to say that we can’t guarantee our safety in the U.S., but we can say that we will at all times practice safety and be ever vigilant of ground conditions.

Please be sure to call us at (704) 659-1455 or send us an email at leader@campus-ministry.org to let us know how we can help.
